2012

What does 2012 hold for you?  Perhaps you are looking forward with optimism.  This will be the year of the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee.  Maybe you will be celebrating a major milestone or looking forward to a fresh start, a new job, marriage, a child, beginning University.

Perhaps for many of us, the New Year is filled with anxiety.  On a global scale, the outlook looks even gloomier than last year, continued unrest in the Middle East, the threats and strains on the Eurozone, the possibility of a double dip recession at home.  And for some of us those fears will be magnified by our own personal circumstances, threats to our health, home and family.  The only ray of hope seems to be that some doomsday prophets think that this will be the last year ever - just because some poor Mayan chap didn’t get round to updating his calendar!

I cannot offer you any predictions about what the year ahead holds for you and I would advise you to stay clear of anyone who claims that they can.  What I can tell you is that God is in control of the future.   Jesus says “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or your body, what you will wear.”  (Luke 12:22).  He says that God knows about what we need and is able to provide it.

Jesus says that rather than worrying about our immediate circumstances, it is more important to sort out your relationship with God, or as Luke 12:31 puts it: “Seek first God’s kingdom.”  Christians are not immune to suffering.  They too will face the same threats of unemployment, repossession and ill health.  However, Christians can face 2012 with confidence knowing that God loves them, has forgiven them for every wrong thing they have ever thought, done or said and is with them throughout every circumstance.  They know that even were the worst to happen and they should face death that they have the promise of eternal life with God forever.   Do you have that same confidence?
